In Spring a carpet of bluebells covers the woodland and in season you can pick blackberries, sloes, greengages & elderberries from trees and bushes weighed down with fruit. Hookhill Plantation offers plenty of scope for exploring, from the ancient woodland shared with Big Sky Lookout – complete with bluebells in season – to the wildflower meadows that Alison and Scott have been nurturing for the past 20 years. The result is a buzzing wilderness of butterflies and birds, badgers, foxes, deer and owls. Inspired by legendary American yurt builder Bill Coperthwaite, and his iconic 70s book, A Simpler Life, owners Alison and Scott set about building Big Sky Retreat to his wooden yurt plans. Scott and Alison’s passion for sustainability can be seen in everything they do - the yurt is entirely constructed from recycled and natural materials and is completely off grid! The wooden furniture, including the Swedish style enclosed king-sized bed, was all handmade by Scott. The homely interior is filled with colourful cushions and thick rugs, and there are some modern touches from the hot shower to the gas hobs. In summer, spend long lazy days admiring the spectacular views from your unique trampoline swing before cooking up a storm in the outdoor kitchen which is complete with your own pizza oven and outdoor dining area! Situated between Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks, the yurt has spectacular 180 degree views across undulating countryside. Big Sky Retreat is a creatively crafted haven of soft wood colours and solitude.
